Dr. Atefeh Rabiee
Principal Investigator

Atefeh Rabiee, PhD

Tenured Associate Professor · Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences · Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy

Dr. Rabiee leads a research program focused on adipocyte biology, metabolic disease, mitochondrial function, and the mechanisms that connect adipose tissue dysfunction to broader cardiometabolic outcomes.

About the PI
Current Lab

Graduate researchers

Current PhD projects center on lipedema adipocyte biology, mitochondrial function, metabolic flexibility, and therapeutic reprogramming of thermogenic pathways.

Ankita Poojari
PhD Graduate Student

Ankita Poojari

Research focus: Cellular and molecular mechanisms of lipedema fat resistance, with emphasis on adipocyte metabolic flexibility, mitochondrial function, and thermogenic potential.

Ankita studies adipose stem cells and differentiated adipocytes from lean, obese, and lipedema donors to understand why lipedema adipocytes show impaired bioenergetic performance despite evidence of preserved or elevated mitochondrial capacity. Her work integrates qPCR, RESIPHER oxygen-consumption measurements, proteomics, and mitochondrial pathway analysis to identify mechanisms that may be therapeutically targeted to restore beige-like thermogenic function.

Md Arafat Hossain
PhD Graduate Student

Md Arafat Hossain

Research focus: Pharmacological activation of thermogenesis in lipedema adipocytes and restoration of metabolic flexibility.

Arafat evaluates mechanism-driven pharmacological strategies designed to overcome impaired thermogenic signaling in lipedema. His current work examines how candidate compounds affect lipid-droplet accumulation, lipolysis, thermogenic gene and protein expression, mitochondrial dynamics, membrane potential, and oxygen consumption in primary adipocytes from lipedema, lean, and obese donors.
